For the past few months, the Dreamland team have been taking part in the Fabrica Gallery's young programmers' peer group. Together with the rest of their group, they present Ruth Leitman & Carol Weaks Cassidy's Wildwood, NJ, as part of the Farica's Hear Me, See Me season.
In the early 90s, an all-woman crew took to the boardwalk of Wildwood, New Jersey to film a documentary about the young men and women who spend their summers flirting, drinking, fighting and sunbathing by the Jersey Shore. Directors Carol Weaks Cassidy and Ruth Leitman were armed with a Super-8 camera, a series of simple questions, and a knack for eliciting answers from their (mostly female) subjects. The result is Wildwood NJ, a fresh, hilarious and surprising time-capsule of a documentary.
Equally hilarious and poignant, this documentary is a unique snapshot of what it was like to be young in one corner of the USA in the early 90’s.
It’s summer. It’s sticky. It’s Wildwood, NJ.
